Riding safely on your motorbike despite rain

BikerSOS has valuable tips for you,  if the weather god does not mean it so well on the motorcycle tour

Sometimes it happens very quick. First, you are happy about sunshine, grippy asphalt and best conditions and then suddenly: rain! On wet roads the tour requires special caution, because for bikers suddenly changes a lot: No metal shell protects from the weather, electric windshield wiper do not exist, and on two wheels slippery surface can quickly lead to critical situations.

Pay attention on manhole covers and road markings

Also motorcycles do face the danger of aquaplaning

In particular, after a long dryness a dangerous lubricating film can be formed by a short shower. This film has bad friction values similar to wet headstone pavement or a snow cover. But with a calm riding style you are quite safe. In case of rain it is generally advisable to adapt the riding style. In particular, road markings and manhole covers quickly become slippery. “Anyone who rides in an inclined position will rarely experience problems,” says Michael Lenzen of the Federal Association of Motorcyclists. He recommends rifing without abrupt braking or acceleration. In roadvalleys and tunnels it is recommended to ride slowly, otherwise you run the risk of aquaplaning.

About aquaplaning

Motorcycles only come into the danger of aquaplaning at slightly higher speeds than cars, because the tires have a round shape and can not build up a water wedge so quickly. But the higher the water level, the more the speed should be reduced. “I would only get off the motorbike if the visibility is so limited that a foresighted riding style is no longer possible and you are no longer perceived by other road users,” says Lenzen.

Behaviour in the rain when riding a motorcycle

Riding in the rain requires special equipment

On the brake discs, however, a thin film of water can form during prolonged riding in the rain. It then delays the response of the brake. “If you pull the brake lightly from time to time, the wheels will dry out in between,” says the professional.

Motorcyclists should protect themselves with a rain suit or Gore-Tex clothes. In addition to a variety of waterproof textile combos, there are also those that are worn over the leather clothing. In addition, hands and feet should be protected from moisture and cold, as long as the gloves and boots are not already waterproof. Tight-fitting overcoats are the least disturbing. In addition: When it rains, the body cools down quickly. For longer tours, therefore, it is better to take breaks to warm up yourself .

A good view is particularly important in rain and spray, neither the visor nor the glasses may fog. Therefore, motorcyclists should resort to special anti-fog visors or visors with pinlock system. Practical indeed are also special rubber lips on the glove, which wipe the drops from the visor like a windscreen wiper. Even if it is exhausting when riding at rainy weather: It is important that the rider sits comfortably and easy on the motorcycle even in the rain.

Special gloves help to wipe the rain from the visor

In addition to the rider’s equipment, the motorcycle also has an important role to play in the rain: Thanks to ABS and traction control, modern bikes are predestined for such conditions. In addition, modern and powerful machines have the “Rain” riding mode, which reduces engine power and makes the motorcycle smoother – and thus adapts the acceleration force to the weather conditions.

By the way:
Stopping on the emergency lane  to put on the rain suit is in Austria and many other contries legal only in case of bad weather, because a storm or severe weather would impair road safety. When the (normal) rain starts, it is obligatory to go further to the next parking lot and change there.
